Solar Energy in South Korea
Dear Mr. Young Jin Park,

My name is Hye Lim Chun and I am an 8th grader at Colegio Roosevelt, Lima. In my humanities class, we have been learning and researching about alternative energy resources and I have been interested in energy use of South Korea. Therefore, I have started researching about it, and I have found out that the amount of fossil fuel that South Korea need is really huge and fossil fuel pollutes the environment of South Korea since it emits a lot of carbon dioxide. The purpose of this email is to recommend you to consider using solar energy as an alternative energy source for South Korea to decrease the use of fossil fuels so the environmental pollution can be reduced in South Korea.

Through my research, I have found out that the benefits of solar energy in South Korea outweigh the costs of it. First of all, the positive impacts of solar energy in South Korea are economically significant because, as you know, South Korea is having inflation nowadays, so expenses of fuels are huge burdens for South Koreans. South Koreans¡¯ expenses of use of energy are quite expensive which is approximately $1500 per household. However, if they use solar energy, it will lessen the burdens since solar energy is free and sustainable the installation though it still expensive. Although many people, who work for companies that are engaged in other resources like fossil fuels, could lose their jobs, not every person in South Korea works for those kinds of companies. However, every South Korean will have less need of money for energy from solar energy so they can use that money for other things such as health care.
Solar energy could have a social benefit, as well. Not only will solar energy allow more people to afford electricity, but the savings people make will allow the Korean people to put that money back into the country which will improve the society as well as economy. Additionally, although there is some possibility that solar power plants ruin the scenery of South Korea, energy will reach more people, such as those that live near from the mountains who are having troubles getting enough energy, so the social benefit still outweigh the cost. Moreover, political benefits of solar energy are also important because South Korea¡¯s energy resources import volume, which forms about 85% of the amount of energy South Korea has since there¡¯s no enough energy resources in South Korea, will reduce by at least half if they start generating and using solar energy themselves. Although they can hinder relationships with other countries which export energy resources to South Korea, it is still important because South Korea can consider other ways to get along with those companies and South Korea will have more power and independence globally.
Finally, and most importantly, benefits of solar power are really significant environmentally. Although they will have to cut trees to build solar power plants, the benefits still outweigh the costs because they will be able to pass on a good and clean environment to the next generation and decrease many diseases like sore throat by reducing carbon dioxide that fossil fuel emits. Therefore, I believe that solar energy would be a precious asset for South Korea.

Should you have further questions, please feel free to email me. I look forward to getting feedback from you on this matter. Thank you in advance for your time.

Warm regards,
Hye Lim Chun
